We congratulate the Prince William County Department of
Economic Development as a winner of the
2003 Economic Development Leadership and Accomplishment Award,
We sponsored the award program, but the selection of winners was made by an
independent panel of advisors to CoreNet Global Learning.

The County announced in August 2003, after the award winners
had already been chosen, that it has been selected for a $64.5 million
project by General Dynamics Land Systems, creating 170 jobs initially and
growing to three times that size over time. Although General Dynamics
already had a presence in the county since 1996, which they had already
expanded in 2000 and again in 2002, they had to compete against 10 other
locations nationwide to win this project.
The county already received other publicity and recognition
in 2002 through various media by winning a new 600,000 sq. ft. facility of
Lilly to manufacture insulin products. Details can be found in the

The award was established by
Corporate Real Estate Leader,
the official publication of
CoreNet Global, and is featured in their September 2003 issue, where
you can find more background. Nominations were not limited to CoreNet
Global members.
We presented the award before the estimated 3400
attendees at a general session of the CoreNet Global Summit in Atlanta on

Events
Although we had no role in the selection process, and have
no prior relationship with the County representatives, we were very pleased
to see that Prince William County was among the winners because it has
successfully attracted some major investments recently, notably Lilly and
General Dynamics. They also offer some useful GIS capabilities through
their website, such as an uncomplicated facility search feature which is
integrated with their property data to map the results of any query, and
offer a more sophisticated "Data Mapper" service for those who need more
detailed analysis using ESRI GIS tools. |
